The History of IAM

By James Spruill

In 1986 I made my first trip to Haiti, a small island country of around eight million people. I was surprised to learn that from Tennessee, Haiti is closer than California. Haiti is a country of contrast; beautiful mountains and flowers and warm friendly people, but heart wrenching poverty. Getting off the plane I was shocked at what I saw and felt. I was out of my comfort zone to say the least. What I saw brought tears to my eyes and an ache to my heart. There was so much need that I felt overwhelmed. My thoughts were, “This is impossible.”  Everywhere I looked I saw people who where hungry and suffering. But then I realized that while I cannot do something for everyone, I can do something for someone. Through prayer, God had linked our church with a work in the mountains of Haiti, a Haitian pastor trying to make a difference in the lives of his people. Pastor Edner Paul had given up a business in his country to spend his life serving his people. He became my friend; I lived in his home and ate at his table. I personally made a lifetime commitment to the work in Haiti.

International Allied Missions (IAM) was created as a non-profit organization to help broaden the support of the work in Haiti beyond one lone congregation. Many individuals and churches have joined together to make a difference in this needy country. Unlike many other mission organizations, all of our workers are volunteers. One hundred percent of the donations IAM receives go directly to their designated purpose. All contributions are tax deductible.

Since that early contact we have made many trips to Haiti, sometimes living in tents and going without a shower for several days, but always grateful for the privilege of serving in Haiti. We have seen many changes in the ministry, including Pastor Paul's son, Jean Alix Paul, assuming leadership when Edner passed away. We've been privileged to be a part of it's growth from one church and children's home to seven churches, three schools, and two children's homes.

What I have learned is that when we focus on a need and each of us does something, it all adds up. A little becomes much when God is in it.  With your help, we will continue to feed almost five hundred children five days a week.

I am reminded of what Jesus said in Matthew 10:42. "And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward." Your consideration of helping is greatly appreciated.

In Service of our King,
